Faerietale Happiness Challenge: Happy Spring Cleaning?

So, I need to confess right off here that I would not ever be likely to win a prize for spotless perfection in the housekeeping department.

First of all, I am highly sensitive to strong smells and most household cleaners, and allergic to almost everything. And secondly, even natural cleansers sometimes have a strong smell, and dusting creates dust as it is removing it.

But there are times when there is no help for it; you just have to clean and bear it!

(stacysrandomthoughts.com)

So you wouldn't think there would be anything about it that would create or increase happiness, would you? Not for someone like me.

But I spent a day recently doing some spring cleaning and I would give it a daily simple happiness rating of 6. Why so high? Two reasons...

(1) My son was cleaning alongside me and we were singing, laughing and keeping each other company. It made it much easier and even made it fun.

(2) When we were finished for the day, our home looked so much better, it was a pleasure to see, and to be there. Cleaning up is a gift that keeps on giving. :)

"Cleaning is a practice in loving, caring, and making a difference. 'Cleaning is the process of removing dirt from any space, surface, object, or subject, thereby exposing beauty, potential, truth, and sacredness,' says Tolu Ilesanmi. How's that for a positive outlook when you are staring down a toilet bowl or a sink full of dirty dishes?"~Spirituality & Health

  1. A good spring clean lifts my spirits...plus I love to organize and rearrange things...which is lucky for me as I'm a home support worker for the elderly

  2. I am horrible at keeping things organized! It's something I have been working on for quite a while now. But I am glad to have read this post! Now I can have a happy outlook on cleaning my little messy apartment! :)

  3. Now that is a beautiful way to look at cleaning :) Kind of resonates with my own mantra for doing things! Spring cleaning always makes me feel happier!

    1. Thanks, Shailaja! I'm glad to know it resonates with you. Well, it surprised me that it made me feel happier while I was doing it. Usually, it's only after I'm finished (and exhausted), that I'm pleased with it.

    1. Hi Suzy! You are most welcome. Well, I am not even ready to tackle my closet. *shivers* But I have begun to eye it and consider, so maybe it won't be too long before I dive in!

    1. Swathi, a kindred spirit (someone who hates cleaning)! But yes, it makes such a big difference when you don't have to do it alone.

  8. Cleaning is so important, even though most people have a bit of a grumble before we start. At university, I lived with 2 really messy people. I was forever cleaning up after them/ cleaning the house alone!

    1. I agree, it is important. But it helps sometimes to be able to grumble a bit beforehand, just like you've said. :)

  9. Having just turned my home upside down for the origination of spring cleaning (Passover purification), I commiserate. But, you do have to admit, it does sparkle for an hour or two...

    1. Oh, wow! Yeah, I guess that really is spring cleaning. But you're right, the sparkle is special. If only I could figure out a way to make it last longer!!

  10. Cleaning is the one time I'm happy that we don't have more bathrooms LOL But it is lovely to see it all done. When my house is messy I invite people round and then I know it will get done...

    1. Ana, you have got the right idea, for sure! Except, believe it or not, I have sometimes changed the plans at the last minute just to avoid it.
