Identify Your Theology: Tell Me about God

Identify Your Theology:
Question Six

We've been exploring spiritual belief questions about the divine this week. Yesterday, I asked about whether or not your god has feminine qualities and I shared about my own longing for a mother god.

Today, we'll turn our attention to our next question, but before we do, head on over to your retreat room so you can relax and let go of any of the day’s stress. Or listen to your meditation right here...

Today’s Question

Tell me more about what your god (or goddess) is like.

Based on what you believe about the divine, how would you describe the divine’s qualities or attributes? Is the divine good? Kind?

All-knowing? All-powerful?

"Growing up, I often wondered what God was like. For me, church was a wipeout experience that only left me with more questions than answers. So I often wondered, 'God, if you exist, what are you like? Who are you – really?'" ~Living on the Edge

"We often use the problem of evil to show a deity that is all powerful, all knowing, and all good/loving, to be illogical. But where do we get these definitions? Are they reasonable attributes of a deity? What traits/attributes/characteristics is a deity required to have? If a deity is required to have certain attributes, why?" ~Apprentice in DebatingChristianity.com

Journal Questions

Now that you’ve read today’s question and a quote or two to get you thinking, head on back into the mini-retreat to close it and to see the journal questions and the blessing I’ve written for you.

  1. I grew up believing that if I wasn't "good" I'd be punished and that God was watching and judging everything I did and thought at all times. This is such a harmful belief to carry around.

It's taken me years (and years) to let go of that nonsense and now I firmly believe in a loving God. One who supports rather than punishes. One who is kind and loving rather than judgmental.

    1. Amen! Me, too, Lynne. And yes, what a harmful belief to carry around! I had the same one and am so glad to have become able to let go of it.

  2. That idea that God )or Source as I like to call him/her) is feminine or masculine is an interesting one. I think that is a label placed there by people for people. We all have aspect of both the feminine and the masculine so it makes sense to me personally, that the Source would have both as well. Different aspects perhaps.

    1. Good point, Bonnie! I think you might be right, that people have needed a male or female god but that the actual one is all/both/spirit.

  3. I think of Source as bigger than myself. I think Source can 'test' us (but I believe our subconscious can!). It is not punishing and is supporting, as long as we take action to live in alignment with our purpose. I find Source comforting as well. Thanks for the post. It's a neat question to think about.

    1. Oh, how wonderful that you find the divine comforting and supporting, but not punishing. Love that! Thanks for coming to visit me and leaving your thoughts behind. :)

Thanks so much for coming to visit and sharing your thoughts! Let me know where you are and I'll come say hello at your place next.

By the way, I know that sometimes my readers disagree with what I say here and I wanted to let you know that not only is it okay with me if you happen to as well, but you also are welcome to tell me so, as long as you do so kindly.

Have a great day!
